First Canning Experience

A few weeks ago my sister and I rolled up our sleeves and canned green and purple beans. The project was so much fun! It involved lots of squealing, accidentally setting a dish towel on fire and overfilling the canning pot so that we ended up with a hot waterfall at one point. No one was injured (thank heavens) and last night we opened the first jar of Dilly Beans and were so pleased that they tasted absolutely delicious. With only 11 jars left I don’t think they will last long.

Wall Street House

There is something very special about returning to a place that has seen a lot of personal sweat and tears. Seven or eight years ago B and a host of our friends and family undertook several major renovation projects at the Wall Street house. B lived there very temporarily (when it was still in it’s unfinished, practically unlivable state) and then began renting it out. This is the only house we own that we’ve never lived in together (except for one that we basically flipped). In anticipation of a house tour coming in the near future where we will browse room-by-room right here on the blog I thought it would be fun to post a few pictures of the pre-remodel Wall Street. This place needed a lot of love. Good thing B is so handy.

In which we become urbanites

A month and a half into living downtown and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I love the view of the city, the awesome digs at Cyan PDX, the brisk walk to work every day, the gym that is only 5 floors below me instead of miles away, and the fact that my home now takes right around 30 minutes to clean. (600 square feet will do that to you)

Hands down this has been one of the best decisions B and I have made recently. Hello Portlandia. Thanks for welcoming us so warmly.

And we’re moving…

Turns out that we are headed over the river (but not to Grandmother’s house) and there aren’t any woods along the way.

Bryan and I decided to take the plunge, rent out our duplex entirely and venture into the city. Yes. That’s right. We’re going to be urbanites for awhile. No, not yuppies. I am claiming the title urbanite.

We will have a beautiful westward view of the city from the 7th floor of a downtown high rise. It’s definitely exciting to think of moving so much closer to work (particularly when we’re pulling much longer shifts and the 30 minute drive home at 2am is a real drag). The challenge will be how drastically we’re downsizing. 1200 square to just under 600.

My new years weekend will consist of some very serious purging activities. Furniture is getting sold. Lots of things are being donated to the thrift store. It feels refreshing just thinking about it. I love de-cluttering.

Getting my house in order

This is a season of tidying. Since I love to be organized with every fiber of my being, that makes this a very pleasant time for me. Of course, cleaning house comes in many forms.

I am scrubbing my actual home from top to bottom over the weekend.

There will be much purging of the unnecessary and extraneous. And hopefully several trips to the thrift store. Perhaps even postings on craigslist.

Windows will be washed, floors scoured, shelves organized and all furniture moved for dusting purposes.Fresh coats of paint and minor repairs are in order. The yard will be reseeded. It’s time to take stock of the pantry and clean out the fridge. All those dark corners in the closets must be cleaned out.

Lest my inner life think it gets away scot-free, here’s a warning to the soul. There will be a “taking stock” of all things emotional and a sweeping out of the cobwebs which cling to the recesses of my heart. Oh yes, this weekend promises to be lots of hard work but I am thrilled already as I think of what every thing will be like on the other side.
